The UFZ is one of the world’s leading research centers in the field of environmental research. It outlines ways to sustainably use natural resources for the benefit of mankind and the environment.
As a reliable partner, the UFZ supports policymakers, industry and civil society in better understanding the impact of human activity on the environment and in developing options for social decision-making processes.
This is done by tackling social challenges, generating knowledge and creating technologies to identify problems early on in the conflicting areas of the environment and society, and to develop preventative solutions.
Complex environmental problems can only be solved by bridging the gap between natural, engineering and social sciences. The UFZ has extensive experience in integrated environmental research. It provides innovative scientific infrastructures and maintains important national and international partnerships. In this way, practice-oriented solutions are developed that have a sound scientific basis.
The UFZ was founded in 1991 and now has more than 1,100 employees from over 40 countries at its locations in Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg. Approximately 250 doctoral students cooperate internationally on their dissertations and around 55 apprentices are trained in 12 different apprenticeships and vocational study courses.
