Mercer Stendal, a member of the Mercer International Group, is a manufacturer of bleached long-fiber pulp. In the paper industry, for example, this pulp is processed into fine papers and printing papers or high-grade hygienic papers. The pulp is also used as a reinforcing fiber in the reprocessing of waste paper, helping to close the recycling loop.
Mercer Stendal also operates Germany’s largest solid biomass power plant. The components of the wood that cannot be used to produce the pulp, such as non-utilizable bark and branches, vaporized cooking liquor and sewage sludge, are used to generate energy, i.e. they are incinerated, thereby generating energy from biomass.
The company generates 135 MW of electricity which enables it to meet all its own electricity needs and feed part of this renewable energy into the public power grid. By-products like tall oil and turpentine can be utilized by industry.
